Reinforcement Sailing

چکیده

This thesis examines applying reinforcement learning to sailing. We give two conceptually different models of a simple sailing boat. Standard tabular reinforcement learning is shown to be ineffective in controlling these naturally continuous models. We examine a method [Smith, 2001b] which adaptively quantises both the state and action spaces and show that it has similar performance to the tabular case but requires only a fraction of the resources. Finally we examine the continuous method of wirefitting [Baird and Klopf, 1993] combined with advantage learning [Baird, 1995]. Our findings suggest that for tasks which require smoothly-changing actions in response to slowly-changing states (such as sailing) the best results are obtained by using a continuous method. Wire-fitting was found to have a slower convergence rate, but might form a good starting point for a yacht’s autopilot.

Autonomous sailboat navigation

The purpose of this study was to investigate novel methods on an unmanned sailing boat, which enables it to sail fully autonomously, navigate safely, and perform long-term missions. The author used robotic sailing boat prototypes for field experiments as his main research method. Two robotic sailing boats have been developed especially for this purpose. A compact software model of a sailing boa...

Development of an upwind sailing ergometer.

PURPOSE To develop a sailing ergometer that accurately simulates upwind sailing exercise. METHODS A sailing ergometer that measures roll moment accompanied by a biofeedback system that allows imposing a certain quasi-isometric upwind sailing protocol (ie, 18 bouts of 90-s hiking at constantly varying hiking intensity interspersed with 10 s to tack) was developed. Ten male high-level Laser sai...

Quantifying external focus of attention in sailing by means of action sport cameras.

The aim of the current study was twofold: (1) to validate the use of action sport cameras for quantifying focus of visual attention in sailing and (2) to apply this method to examine whether an external focus of attention is associated with better performance in upwind sailing. To test the validity of this novel quantification method, we first calculated the agreement between gaze location meas...

Sailing and sports medicine: a literature review.

Sailing medicine has been mainly addressed by healthcare professionals who happen to sail. Although there has been an increase in the number of studies of various aspects of sailing over the last 15 years, efforts to advance evidence based knowledge of sailing and sports medicine face unique obstacles. Recent interest in research by groups such as Olympic and America's Cup teams has produced be...
